I've managed to achieve a personal goal in my fitness program: I can now bench press more than our pipsqueak of a President. Published reports indicate that he can bench press 185 pounds 5 times, which suggests a one-time max of 213 pounds. As of last week (which was the first time my trainer and I have measured my maximums in several months), my own one-time max bench press is 227 pounds. For the record, while I'm gloating, we also measured one-time max lat pull at 213 pounds, squat at 277 pounds, and seated row at 206 pounds.
Oh, yeah, and we'll just ignore the fact that El Presidente is 20 years older and 3 inches shorter than me... Let me enjoy my "victory"! ;-)
Actually, I did considerably better than my trainer expected... Afterwards, I asked him why we had worked up to the max so slowly, starting at about 175 pounds and going up about 10 pounds at a time; he said he had expected me to max out at about 195. Oh, ye of little faith!
Of course, this means that my trainer will be setting the weights that much higher on my regular workouts, so I'll be working harder... But that's cool... Bring It On! ;-)
