Wait, isn't Burning Man in September? Eight months from now? You sure do plan ahead.

Yes, but... Burning Man is the week leading up to Labor Day weekend. Pretty much every RV place sells out that weekend, so if you want one you have to reserve early. The first time I went to Burning Man, we didn't decide to go until just a month or two before, and the only RVs that were still available were the biggest (and most expensive) RVs from the biggest (and most expensive) rental company.

I'm actually hoping that I might buy my own RV or travel trailer before then, but I don't know for sure, so I decided to play it safe to make the reservation. I can cancel it with only a small penalty.

Plus, the earlier you make a reservation (with deposit), the lower your rate.

I'm jealous. I haven't gone the RV route to BM in years, but it sure was nice.

I know that hard-core Burners will show up with nothing but a backpack, but I'm a wimp... ;-) Besides, if I didn't bring an RV, how would I bring all the tools and supplies and stuff that I end up loaning/gifting to everybody who shows up with nothing but a backpack? ;-)

Well, one year I brought the eOrbit schoolbus, so there's that. Other years, I've piled all my tools and supplies onto the Fandango "Happy Truck" we've rented the last few years, or let them take up an obscene amount of space in whatever vehicle I happened to own, borrow, or rent at the time.

But yeah, I can't live out there without my cordless drill, multiple tool boxes, etc., either. And an RV makes that lots easier. =)

I have no idea what my situation will be at the end of the summer. And so, no Burning Man plans for me yet.

Even if you get an RV or trailer, you still might want to use a rental for Burning Man.

Probably not... Burning Man is one of the major reasons I'm thinking about getting my own.

I've had pretty good luck keeping the rental RVs clean up there for the past couple of years. It just takes a bit of thought and a little effort throughout the week; minor stuff like taking a few seconds to whack the worst of the dust off before you come in so as not to track it in with you.

And "easy cleanup" (linoleum floors rather than carpeting, plain cabinet doors rather than ones with fancy woodworking where dust can hide, etc.) is definitely one of my major considerations in shopping for an RV. Some of the units designed for folks who do off-road motorcycling seem well-suited for this.

Or you could plan your annual servicing and cleaning of all your appliances with intakes (fridge, furnaces, air conditioner) for just after Burning Man.

Good idea; thanks!
